Training is the employer's responsibility
OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178 requires that every powered industrial truck operator be trained and evaluated before operating without supervision — and it puts that duty on the employer. The requirement has three parts: formal instruction, practical hands-on training, and a workplace performance evaluation.
Our course delivers all three, and you get the completion records that document compliance for each operator.
What the course covers
Classroom instruction covers the regulations, truck stability and the load triangle, load handling, pedestrian awareness, refueling or battery charging, and inspection routines. Hands-on training puts each operator on the truck for supervised driving and maneuvering, followed by a written test and a practical evaluation.
Training and evaluation are scoped to the truck classes your operators actually use — from counterbalance forklifts to narrow aisle trucks and pallet jacks.

Most customers choose on-site training: operators learn on your equipment, in your aisles, with your loads — which is exactly the workplace-specific evaluation OSHA has in mind. We also run classes at our branches if that fits your schedule better.

FAQs
How long does forklift operator certification last?
OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or workplace conditions change.
Can you train at our facility?
Yes. On-site training is the most common format, and OSHA evaluation is specific to your workplace and equipment anyway. We also run classes at our branch locations.
What do operators receive when they pass?
Each operator who completes formal instruction, hands-on training, and the practical evaluation receives completion documentation for your records, including the operator name, training dates, and evaluator — the record OSHA expects employers to keep.
What equipment does the training cover?
Training and evaluation are specific to the truck classes your operators use — counterbalance forklifts, narrow aisle trucks, and pallet trucks/stackers, electric or internal combustion. Tell us your fleet mix and we will scope the course to it.
What is train-the-trainer?
